Buy the PS4 version for someone who needs to play on a PS4. For a PS5 owner, first ask which version they actually want: the native PS5 edition or a compatible PS4 version. Also check existing ownership and current upgrade access before paying for another copy.

A PS5 console and the PS5 edition of a game are different things. The hardware can run supported older games, but that does not make every installed copy the newer edition. This distinction matters for friends, progress, game features and the value of the present.

Separate the machine from the game version

The machine is the console in the room. The game version is the particular software the player launches. Someone who upgraded their hardware may still use an older version deliberately, so the console name alone does not settle the purchase.

Think of a computer running an older program. The newer device does not automatically replace every program with a newer edition. In the same way, a PS5 can be part of a setup that still includes supported PS4 games.

Sony’s backward-compatibility guidance explains how supported PS4 games work on PS5 and the role of a disc drive for disc-based copies. Compatibility is not the same as a new entitlement or an edition change.

If the recipient has a PS4

The product needs to support PS4 explicitly. A box labelled only for PS5 should not be purchased on the assumption that the older console will understand it. Match the supported platform in the actual description.

Also check the supplied format. A disc, wallet voucher and downloadable add-on are not the same product. A listing can show familiar artwork while providing a different kind of access from the one you intended.

Ask whether the player already owns GTA V. If they do, another PS4 copy is normally useful only for a specific reason, such as replacing a missing disc or collecting a particular physical edition. Establish that reason before buying.

If the recipient has a PS5

Ask which version they want to use. The native PS5 edition has features intended for that platform, while a supported PS4 version can still be part of their library. Do not decide solely on the word “newer.”

Rockstar’s current GTA V information describes the platform-specific upgrades and migration options. Use the selected store page to identify the actual product and included modes for the recipient.

If they play online with friends, ask which version the group launches. That is more precise than asking whether everyone owns a PlayStation. The purpose of the gift is to fit the existing group, not to make the player change arrangements unexpectedly.

Check current upgrade access before buying

An existing owner may have an upgrade route or access that makes a duplicate purchase unnecessary. Rockstar’s upgrade support page is the relevant source to check for current eligibility and conditions.

Do not rely on an old article saying an upgrade is paid or free. Those terms can change, and physical ownership can involve conditions different from digital ownership. Let the recipient inspect their account’s available options.

If they already have the intended access, choose something else they want. A gift can contribute to a different game, replace a worn accessory or provide useful store credit. Paying for an entitlement they already hold does not automatically improve their experience.

A disc requires the appropriate drive

A PS4 disc used through supported backward compatibility requires a PS5 with a drive. Sony’s guidance explains that the disc must be available when playing the disc-based copy. A console configured without a drive cannot read it directly.

Later PS5 hardware and the original Digital Edition have different drive options. If you are considering an add-on drive, check the exact model against Sony’s drive compatibility information rather than assuming all digital models support it.

For an ordinary game gift, you do not have to solve the hardware situation with another purchase. A supported digital route can fit the existing setup. Our PS5 Digital guide explains that choice in more detail.

Read what the edition includes

A GTA V package can mention story mode, GTA Online or additional content. Read the content list for the selected platform instead of inferring it from the title alone. A store search can place full games, bundles and currency products close together.

If the recipient wants the single-player story, make sure the product includes that access. If they already play Online and want virtual currency, that is a different gift category. A subscription is different again.

The words “Premium” and “PS5” do not mean the same thing. One can describe a content package, while the other identifies a platform version. Our GTA V versus Online guide explains why the included experience matters as much as the platform logo.

Keep progress decisions with the player

Rockstar provides migration options for eligible progress, but that does not mean a gift buyer should initiate a transfer. Progress, account linking and version selection belong to the person who plays the game.

Ask what they want to preserve and follow the current official guidance. Do not promise that every item, currency balance or later action will move or remain synchronized across every version. The exact migration rules determine that.

Installing the new edition secretly can also consume storage or create confusion about which version is being launched. Give the product and let the recipient decide when to set it up. A surprise should not require changing the state of their existing account.

Wallet credit can leave the right choice open

If you know the recipient uses PlayStation but cannot confidently choose between eligible editions, suitable PlayStation Store credit lets them decide. Match the voucher to their account region before buying.

Sony’s redemption instructions explain the region requirement and warn that funds or content cannot be transferred between accounts. Let the recipient redeem it on the intended account instead of testing it on your own.

Be clear about what you are giving. A contribution toward the desired edition is not the same as a promise that a particular package is fully paid for. The final checkout total and any existing entitlement determine what remains to be purchased.

If more than one relative is buying gaming presents, share the agreed platform and format with each buyer. You can coordinate the compatibility details without revealing everyone’s final choice. That avoids receiving a disc, a code and a voucher that belong to three different setups.

Compare two realistic gift situations

An adult with a PS4 who has never owned GTA V needs a PS4-compatible product with the wanted modes. The practical checks are format, contents, seller and suitability. A PS5-only box is the wrong starting point for that machine.

A PS5 owner already playing GTA V needs a different conversation. They might want no new copy at all, might be using a PS4 version deliberately, or might already qualify for the edition they want. In that case, checking access can save the entire cost of a duplicate purchase.

Confirm the console, desired version, existing ownership, drive and product contents in that order. Then read the final order description before paying. Those checks make a version-specific gift useful without requiring you to learn every detail of the game yourself.
